Jaisalmer is Rajasthan’s majestic desert country. This Gateway to the Thar Desert is nicknamed the “Golden City” because of the golden sandstone color that is exhibited by its forts, temples, and houses. The city was founded by the legendary Rajput King Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century, and is, therefore, named after him.
Located south west of Jaipur, Jaisalmer is most famous for its Jaisalmer Fort (also called The Golden Fort), a World Heritage Site. A quarter of the city’s population still lives within the boundaries of the fort.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Jaisalmer rose in prestige and prominence as it became an important stopover in the profitable silk trade that spanned from India to China. Many of its ornate temples, palaces, and Havelis were built during this era of prosperity.
